The Cardinals offer condolences to the family of Oscar Taveras, the 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder who was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic. All fans are invited to use this guestbook blog to share their condolences and memories of Oscar as well.

Milwaukee Brewers v St. Louis Cardinals“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”

“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”

The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

I watched video tribute Cards had on Opening Day. OT, we hardly knew ye. I did not notice so much what an infectious, fun smile you had. So very, very sad. Here’s to the young that they learn from your way-too-soon passing with your friend. Hasta luego.

Upon reading my posting, I sincerely apologize for misspelling Oscar’s surname, …an oversight on my part. – “Oscar, You look(ed) sooo good in ththat Cardinals’ uni, …and to remember the power and grace, and yes, the passion you had for the game, is something that will always be known, and remembered, by fans everywhere.” – May God ease your families pain, and have them know that you are in the best place that you could possibly be. “Hey there no.18, Your kind of talent only comes along so often, and ya got to The Show, …to hear the crack of bat, the loud cheer of the home fans, and for you to have your moment, (no matter how brief it was) in the spotlight.”. – Here’s to ya Oscar, for just whispering your name, makes me smile. (Once again, my apologies for the original mis-spell.)

I have been a Cardinals’ fan for over 40 years, and every once in awhile, a young man comes into the Cardinal fold who embodies both a superior talent with a look of natural belonging in a Cardinals uniform, …and Oscar is one of these young men who is blessed, and graced, with these attributes. I look upon his abbreviated time with the big club, and can easily see that his path was not to be a slow progress to stardom; that Oscar was being put into Life’s spotlight, from the very start. – In my heart, I know that God has received him home, …having given Oscar his time, at what Oscar wished for most: the roar of Cardinal fans, bestowing their applause and thanks upon him, …for doing what he was born to do, …for wearing the Two Birds on his chest, and continuing to have them, fly higher higher than the rest. – Death is only painful for the still living, and now Oscar is wrapped eternally, in Gods’ precious Love. – Oscar, You did us all so well. …and may you now hold the hand of your girlfriend, as you both travel God’s peaceful Kingdom, hand in hand, forever. – I hope the Cardinals’ Front Office puts a picture of Oscar in the Stadium, just to keep our memories fresh, of the young man, named Oscar Traveres.

Oscar was a great talent. I had heard about him and he did not dissapoint. He seemed like he had a real love for the game, a gleam in his eyes. I had a near fatal car crash that changed my life, but I am here Oscar you are an angel in the outfield. To the family from a true cardinals fan I never saw a more talented athlete on the field. We all embrassed him and loved him..

All I know is we lost a very young thriving baseball player who could of done great things for us. I feel so sorry for his parents and the parents of his girlfriend. It would be so hard to lose a child no matter how it happens. We all have done stupid things in our lives and I just hope that young players will learn a lesson from this and know that any one of them could lose their lives while driving under the influence.

OSCAR, YOU LEFT US ALL TO SOON. I LOVED TO WATCH YOU PLAY & KNEW HOW MUCH POTENTIAL & TALENT YOU HAD. I HAVE “YOUR GAME” WHEN YOU CAME OFF THE BENCH TO PINCH HIT & SMOKED THAT BALL OUT OF THE STADIUM, I KNEW YOU HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL. I HAVE THAT GAME RECORDED & WHENEVER I FEEL DOWN, I WATCH IT & IT MAKES ME FEEL SO MUCH BETTER. YOU WERE & ALWAYS WILL BE A CLASS ACT AND CARDINAL NATION WILL NEVER FORGET YOU. FLY HIGH, OUR BELOVED OSCAR.

Oscar arrived in the Cardinals uniform already a star, and he lived up to the accolades. His winning home run in the 2014 World Series will be forever etched in the minds and hearts of Cardinal Nation.
For a young man with unlimited potential we all sadly grieve.
    Good-bye, young Oscar.

Unbelievable talent with an awesome future. So sad to see a life snuffed out so early. When it first popped up on my phone, I sat there in disbelief and had a tear run down my face. My wife asked what was wrong and all I could say was one of MY Cardinals was gone. I had never met Oscar or even seen him play in person. But he was family to those of us who cherish the fact that we are a part of the Cardinal Nation. He will be missed. God Bless his family.
