The Cardinals offer condolences to the family of Oscar Taveras, the 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder who was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic. All fans are invited to use this guestbook blog to share their condolences and memories of Oscar as well.
“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”
“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”
The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

Oscar will always be a Cardinal, for it is The Cardinal Way.
He will be remembered for his talent that we witnessed for all too short a time and his exuberance in giving everything he had…
To Oscar’s family as well as the family of his girlfriend, we pause and reflect.

I am a true Cardinals fan and when I first heard of Oscar moving up to the big leagues, I was a little scared because I don’t like changes, but once I watched him play I knew the Cardinals had a player in the works to be great. I will always see Oscar as a person that helped many young players understand the true meaning of the game. OT will be missed but his passion and love for the game will never fade away. Oscar and his family are in my prayers. I bet he is playing playing baseball up in heaven.

I’ve followed Oscar extremely close since I was 16 (I’m 20.) Oscar was hyped to be the next Albert Pujols both on & off the field. It’s a shame we’ll never get to see that play out. In 2012 my high school hockey team was on a team building trip in Springfield. We had a chance to see him play. I wouldn’t shut up about how good this guy was & Oscar hit an absolute bomb. He then retreated behind the right field wall & moments later myself & 2 teammates went behind the wall to setup the between inning bike race. I ran into Oscar & complimented him on his home run. He thanked me & gave me that huge smile everyone talks about. I then told him jokingly to give a little bat flip on the next one. His smile grew larger & we both laughed. I knew in that moment that this guy will be something special both on & off the field. From what I’ve seen since then from him & the way he conducted himself; I was right. My thoughts & prayers go out to both Oscar & Edilia’s families.

For a moment this morning when I opened my eyes, the news of Oscar’s death did not weigh heavily on my mind. But the moment passed quickly and the weight of the tragedy hit me again like it did when I first heard. It seems strange to feel so much sorrow over a person I have never met. I hope his family and friends take comfort in the fact that so many who only knew him on the field are feeling a personal and profound loss. I had the joy of seeing Oscar hit a home run in the first game that I saw him play, while playing for the Memphis Redbirds, and again in the last game I saw him play, game 2 of the NLCS. He really was a large part of the future of the franchise, and I was very much looking forward to watching him play for years to come. May angels lead you in, OT. I’m sure you’re learning a lot from Stan the Man and Jack Buck right about now 🙂

I will always remember how excited I got when I heard that Oscar was coming to the big leagues, and then how he made it rain with that awesome home run in his first Major League game. I’m honestly still in shock about all of this, and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Oscar Taveras, his girlfriend Edilia Arvelo’s family, and all of the St. Louis Cardinals and their organization. Oscar had such amazing talent, a wonderful attitude, and an obvious love for the game. May he and his girlfriend both rest in peace, and may God bring comfort to all of their loved ones during this difficult time.

Was special for me because there had been so much hype about this young prospect & I was going to see his major league debut in person @ my beloved Busch! It’s bittersweet now, because that would be the last time I saw him play in person. May God be w) Oscar’s family, his girlfriend’s family, his friends & his teammates. My heart hurts for you all.

Not often am I at a loss for words, but I find myself having a hard time finding words over the loss of Oscar Taveras. What a joy he was to watch over and over again. I spend a lot of time at Busch Stadium during baseball season and have spent a lot of time watching Oscar. Although he was not with us long, he left such a big impact. You could tell how much be truly loved the game and how much he enjoyed being a part of the Cardinals family. I will miss seeing his contagious smile and his incredible talent.
