The Cardinals offer condolences to the family of Oscar Taveras, the 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder who was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic. All fans are invited to use this guestbook blog to share their condolences and memories of Oscar as well.

Milwaukee Brewers v St. Louis Cardinals“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”

“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”

The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

It takes a special talent to touch so many lives in such a short time, and that is what you have done! My condolences to the families of both Oscar and his girl friend. R.I.P.

As the rest of Cardinal Nation knows, when a guy wears the birds on the bat, he becomes a part of your family. Even though we don’t know these guys personally, we love each and every one of them as if we do. Oscar was no different. The anticipation of his big league debut… his first game… his first homerun… the excitement of his bright future.
Oscar, we all mourn today and will continue to mourn and miss you throughout the years at Busch. Hope you knew how much you meant to the world during your short time with us and help guide your teammates through this difficult time from above. Rest in peace!

I’m still a young cards fan, only 18, so Oscar was huge for me. I love baseball, and the culture of the sport. Oscar was the living embodiment of this sport, and to see it leave so early, and way to soon, it kills me. Rest in peace buddy. The legends wait for you in a better place.

As a Cardinal fan for exactly 50 years, I was awestruck by just a a few…Bobby Tolan, Bake McBride, Silvio Martinez, Joe Magrane, JD Drew, and of course Albert Pujols, but never did I pull as hard for any as I did for Oscar. Maybe it was the smile, maybe it was he hit LH like my idol Musial, or maybe it was just the time. I thought he would be a superstar. I guess we’ll never know. He’ll be forever on my mind. God bless you, Oscar, and your families. RIP.

Rays/Braves fan here: It’s always jarring to see someone die as young as 22, especially when it appears that he or she had clearly not peaked in life. Oscar Taveras is a the latest unfortunate example. Baseball fans were robbed of seeing a likely star player achieve his potential and shine on the field for years to come. Even worse yet, those who knew him best lost a son, a brother and a friend. R.I.P. Oscar Taveras and Edilia Arvelo, whose loss is equally tragic.

I have been a not only a Cardinals fan, but a sports fan all my life. I follow lots of different sports through out the world. There are loses like this all over the world where someone with the team passes away when he or she is in the middle of their career. The thing is that I have never heard of a organization hit so hard like the Cardinals with the this sort of devistation that has happened in the last 20 years.
You would think that the organization and fans would be able to deal with a situation like this since it has happened so much. This is so far from the truth. It doesn’t get any easier for anyone associated with the organization or fan base.
Oscar was a very up beat and exciting player to watch where he was out in the field. It is really a shame that his journey had to end so soon. My condolences to his family and all of the Cardinals organization for a lose of not knly a great ball player but a great kid with everything in front of him.

When I heard the news this morning I was shocked and then saddened. I immediately flashed back to your first hit as a Cardinal. As the ball left the bat and went over the fence I saw your bright future. I envisioned you leading the Cardinals for years to come. But God had other plans. You were taken from us way to early. You will not only be missed by Cardinals Nation, but by the entire MLB family and anyone that knew you. May you continue to play with Stan the Man and the rest of the angels. My deepest condolences to your family and friends. You will be missed.

I am a huge cub fan and hearing this really is upsetting. Losing a person at such a young age is upsetting enough but here we lost two people. I’ve always been a fan of baseball and always loved watching the greatest players play baseball. I am a fan of Albert pujols cause he was one of the best. Oscar Tavares looked like a guy that would have kicked the cubs ass. Watching him develop was going to be a very fun thing to watch, almost like mike trout. I was hoping the worst thing for the cardinals would have been losing in the playoffs and I would have been happy with that. It’s a shame that it doesn’t even come close to being the worst thing that happened to cardinal nation. This is a sad day in sports. Rest in peace oscar. I wish the two families the best of luck with going thru this.

I remember Oscar’s first debut game, and when he got a homerun I jumped to my feet! Not only did he become one of my favorite players on the team, he also had such a good heart for someone so young in his profession. I pray for his family, the team, and the fans who lost a great person. We will miss you Oscar Tavares 😦

Oscar even though your trip in the majors what cut short you brought some great memories. With your home run in your mlb debut and your pitch hit homer in the NLCS. I will never forget you and now you can join the real majors and play with all the stars in heaven. God bless and rest in peace.

Finding out the news felt like a dream. Still heartbroken and in disbelief I type this. Being such a big Cardinals fan I feel like I have lost a family member and can’t hold back the tears. Oscar had such a bright future ahead of him and I couldn’t wait to be able to witness his career. With his first swing he brought rain. I was fortunate enough to be able to watch in person Oscar’s last at bat at Busch. Still at loss for words, all I can say is fly high. You will never be forgotten and will always be a Cardinal legend. Gone too soon. Rest in peace. #12in15for18
