Milwaukee Brewers v St. Louis Cardinals“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”

“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”

I’m a diehard Cubs fan and to be honest I’m a little hesitant to post here. However, this tragedy surpasses any rivalry. When I heard this news, I was sick to my stomach as a baseball fan. Oscar had so much talent yet untapped and so much life to live. This is beyond tragic. I was so looking forward to the next decade or so to see our young prospects and Cardinals teams led by Oscar play each other. We’ll never get to see that now. Baseball as a whole was robbed and I offer my sincerest, heartfelt condolences to Oscar’s family, friends, the Cardinals, and their fans. I tip my Cubs cap to you all today. I am so sorry.

Saw him play many times here in Memphis.  He did not appear to play the game with reckless abandon nor any urgency…..in fact, I’m pretty sure the club thought he was not tough enough with some superficial wounds he received early on.   They were slow to promote him from Triple A.   It was a case of tough love.  Then the Cards promoted him and he hit a HR in his 1st at bat.   Then he hit .239 rest of the way.   I’m not sure if he ever would have succeeded considerably at the MLB level.   However, from what I saw, he was pure grace.   His swing was very close to Griffey Jr.   And the bat had huge pop.   My gut says he would have overcame, what I perceived as, immaturity and gone on to have a MVP career. He was so, so close to making that happen.

    And, I am a Braves fan….

    Much respect.

Another Cardinal taken way too early. Oscar will not only be missed at the big club in St.Louis, but he made a big impact to get there here in AAA Memphis Redbirds. We will miss you and your great attitude you brought to every game when talking to the fans.

I was at his first game versus the Giants this year with my college roommates, and when we heard Oscar got called up, the game instantly got better. We had all you can eat and drink, great seats, but seeing Oscar turn on that pitch and put it into the right field bleachers was amazing! I have so many Cardinal memories but this is up there. He seemed to just be happy to be at the ballpark. Condolences to his and his girlfriends family

I worked for the Johnson City Cardinals 2009-2011. I was lucky enough to get to know several of the players and I follow their progress each year. Oscar was one of those guys. The spring training following the championship I had the opportunity to join the team for the ring presentation but before the game I was showing my wife around Roger Dean Stadium and we came across the field that he was on. I told her that day that he would play in St Louis really soon. He overheard me bragging about him and made eye contact with me then went back to what he was doing. Very humble young man. Rest in peace, Oscar. You are missed.

Oh Oscar, how can this be? How can this be happening again to another Cardinals player, just when his time should be beginning. We at Cardinal Nation, will NEVER get used to this.
It seems like yesterday you walked up to bat and hit your first home run as a St. Louis Cardinal and the fans went crazy with excitement. I believe and I may be wrong, that your last up to bat was a home run too. You will always be a Cardinal, only now your wings soar higher. You have earned the ultimate Home Run! Our hearts break for your family, friends and those of your girlfriend as well. We pray for them all to find some comfort in knowing, how much Cardinal Nation loved you. Rest In Peace Oscar and to your girlfriend. R.I.P.

It’s weird. I’ve never really been said over a celebrity’s death so this is a weird feeling for me. It feels like yesterday I was telling my friends about the prospect Oscar Taveras. This Cano-like hitter with insane skills but now none of that matters. I pray for your family and your girlfriend’s family. Life is too short and too precious. #rip
