The Cardinals offer condolences to the family of Oscar Taveras, the 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder who was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic. All fans are invited to use this guestbook blog to share their condolences and memories of Oscar as well.
“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”
“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”
The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

So sad. I’m sorry Oscar. There are so many moments that stand out as either funny or just plain awe inspiring. Two that stand out are your first major league home run, & your game tying, pinch hit NLCS home run in St. Louis. The crowd absolutely erupted that night, and I was excited to know that I’d be hearing that crowd pop like that because of you for years to come. Condolences to the Tavares family, friends, & the family of his girlfriend. Shocked & saddened. #CardinalNation

Thank you Oscar for the short time that we as Cardinals fans had to watch you as a Cardinal. I think I speak for many when I say that you had such an impact on others’ lives in just a short amount of time. Such a great young talent lost at way too early of an age. My condolences go out to Oscar and his girlfriend’s families. You will be missed and remembered OT.

RIP Oscar. You had so much potential. You could have been one of the greatest to play the game. I can’t imagine how your family must feel. I can’t imagine how someone who thought of you as their favorite feels. It’s like a part of the baseball world was just ripped from us. Keep hitting homers in the afterlife, buddy. It was an honor to get to see you play for the brief time that I did.

Watching his pure excitement playing and that smile was contagious. My sincere condolences to Oscar’s family and friends, as well as his girlfriend’s. My heartfelt prayers for peace for our beloved Cardinals and my fellow Cardinal fans. RIP OT#18, you will never be forgotten. May the grass always be green and the pitches perfect for you now. Oscar I was going enjoy watching you play for the next 15 years. But we won’t get to see that. Baseball as a whole has been robbed to see your greatness shine. Like Matheny said, we loved you, like you loved us. Rest in peace Oscar, watch over the boys and us with that smile we will remember. Rest well Oscar.

I was there when you made your MLB debut & saw that first MLB home run! I actually broke my phone because I was so excited, I ended up throwing my phone 2 aisles in front of me. I never got to meet you in person but I definitely felt like I knew you. You were in my home for 162+ games & I cheered you on with all my heart. I’m thinking of your family & your girlfriend’s family. You both were way to young to leave this world. May you both rest in eternal peace with each other.

These deaths are too tragic for words. Two young people just starting to live and understand what life is all about taken senselessly. My prayers to both of their families. Oscar was able to have a small taste of his dream to play pro baseball and lucky for us, it was with the Cardinals. For those people who can’t understand why we mourn people we don’t know, and in many cases have never met, there’s a special place in our hearts reserved for our Cardinals, our Rams and our Blues who we can only love and admire from afar.

From a Cubs fan, all of baseball lost a magnificent talent and young man. I was looking forward to the Taveras/Baez rivalry for years like the McGwire/Sosa battle. Oscar was the next big thing and now, a great bright future was cut short. Blessings to his friends and family and the St. Louis Cardinals. Stay strong. Stay together. Fly high Oscar.
