The Cardinals offer condolences to the family of Oscar Taveras, the 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder who was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic. All fans are invited to use this guestbook blog to share their condolences and memories of Oscar as well.
“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”
“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”
The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

My heart goes out to Oscar’s family and the family of Ms. Arvelo. What a thrill to see his final home run at Busch two weeks ago. May God welcome them into the eternal kingdom and grant comfort to those they leave behind. May his fellow Cardinals find comfort in the great memories they have of Oscar.

My heart hurts for your family, your girlfriend’s family and all of Cardinal Nation. We all watched your flashes of professional brilliance with the bat, but oh the potential that will never be realized…What we are left with are memories of your smile, your young energetic spirit. I am choking up, thinking about your last moments, I hope it was quick and that neither of you suffered in your passing, and that you felt the gentle hands of Jesus, guiding you home…You will be missed young man…

Still today the news just doesn’t seem real! I recently moved to the KC area and don’t get a whole lot of cardinals games now however, I did catch his first at bat in the majors and I remember saying out loud to my husband, this kid is gonna be in sports news for a long time to come. He will forever be remembered no matter how quickly it ended. My prayers go out to his family and Cardinal nation. I still tear up every time it’s mentioned.

It’s so hard to believe he’s gone. I was stunned when I heard last night…couldn’t believe it. This morning I saw footage of the memorial for him at Busch stadium. I went out to visit with a friend today, and, driving down the road, I started crying.
I loved to watch Oscar play and his antics in the dugout with Waino, Carp, Big City, and the others…his enthusiasm for the game and for his teammates was contagious. There’s a big hole there now where Oscar was…praying for the family and team.

I never met Oscar personally, but I’ve never heard a negative thing about his character. We all know what his potential was as a ballplayer and as a future part of the Cardinals organization, but his potential as a human being and what he meant to those close to him is the greatest tragedy in all this. I’m 24 years old, and to see someone my age pass away is gut-wrenching and makes it hard to even put my feelings into words.
I can’t even imagine what it must be like for those who knew Oscar, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all of them.
Rest in Peace, Oscar

I feel so terrible for both families. Taverasn you were a magical player and I enjoyed watching every minute you were on the field. I was looking forward to you becoming one of the Cardinal Greats and becoming immortalized in Cardinal history, but not in this way. I wanted to see you chase records and lead our team, but now you are playing a game in heaven with The Man, Dizzy, Hornsby, and many others that you should have been enshrined with. God rest your soul and you will remain in the heart of all Cardinals fans. Thank you for all the hope you gave us and the memories!

Heartbroken and saddened over the loss of Oscar. My deepest thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his girlfriends family and the best baseball family in the world. We were there to witness his first home run, it was my 7year old sons first ballgame and such a memorable one! We were hoping he would get to see a homer that day, and when you nailed it as everyone was going in to get out of rain, I was capturing pictures for my sons photo album, as we knew what you would become to this organization. You were the talk of the weekend, the next big thing! Thank you for the memories you gave my family and the cardinal nation family. You will be forever missed..
