The Cardinals offer condolences to the family of Oscar Taveras, the 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder who was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic. All fans are invited to use this guestbook blog to share their condolences and memories of Oscar as well.

Milwaukee Brewers v St. Louis Cardinals“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”

“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”

The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

Thoughts and prayers to both families during this tremendously difficult time. Cardinals Nation is forever a little worse off than we were before. My sons both got the opportunity to meet a wonderfully energetic and passionate young man with a true passion for the game while he played for the Springfield Cardinals (AA) during the 2012 season.

Such a tragedy. My condolences to the cardinal family as well as his own family. I think it would be great if you named the new Clydesdale Oscar or OT in his honor.

I’ll never forget the homer Oscar hit in Game 2 of the NLCS- pretty clutch for a rookie coming off the bench. You could tell he really enjoyed playing the game. Oscar- you will be missed. Rest in peace

So glad I got to meet you at Winter Warmup and was there in right field to watch your first homerun at Busch and your last during the NLCS. Was looking forward to so many more. Your sudden death sent shock and chills through Cardinal Nation. We had followed your career as you rose to the majors with anticipation. We wonder why God has taken you so young but your infectious smile and graceful swing will live in our memories forever.

The hole the St. Louis Cardinals and Cardinal Nation needs to fill isn’t in the lineup, but in our hearts. We’ll miss you Oscar.

    “Hey rookie. You were good.”

My thoughts are with Oscar’s family as they do the one thing that no parent should have to do, and that is, bury a child. They know that he was a very loved person, but that doesn’t make the pain of this event hurt any less.

    Rest in Peace Oscar.

Oscar showed great poise when he came off the bench during the postseason. We will never know what he would have done, but we know what he could have done. I pray for his family to know comfort and for all his young fans to know how precious life is and not to be afraid to reach for their dreams.
