Milwaukee Brewers v St. Louis Cardinals“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”

“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”

The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

First and foremost, my condolences to the family and friends affected most by this tragedy of two young people. I remember Oscar as a young and bright star in the making. I was there when he hit his first homerun in his second at bat. The joy he brought to the baseball diamond was evident in the way he played the game, it is a memory I will cherish.

I saw him play in Springfield, for Memphis, and with St. Louis. You hear a lot of people complain that sometimes athletes forget they’re paid to play a game. Oscar never did that I saw. The epitome of playing hard and having fun. I cannot imagine the suffering his family is going through, but based on the grief I feel, just a guy who saw him play maybe a dozen times, I know that it is immense. You have my condolences.

22 years is not nearly long enough to make your presence known on this earth. My prayers are with the Taveras family, as well as with his girlfriend who also was called Home yesterday. I pray that they find comfort in this awful time of loss. Cardinal Nation is a family, and we all feel this pain together. R.I.P. OT, you were just beginning to shine on the field, and now you will be shining over the field from above. Gone way too soon. #18

I saw Oscar play for the Memphis Redbirds in Omaha in May 2013, and you could see his potential , hitting wise in one game.. he and Kolton Wong were 2 of the brightest stars I have ever seen in the Cardinal Farm system at the same time..

In this time of grief we should all bow our heads and take a moment of silence. No words nor actions could bring back this baseball hero, this son, this brother, but one thing will always remain, the memories. The homerun during the division series was phenomenal, we will never forget what OT did for us cardinals fans, for his team, for his family. Rest in peace young angel for you will always be missed until the day we all meet again.

Oscar Taveras was the future of the St. Louis Cardinals. I was excited to see what was in store for the young outfielder. For reasons I can’t comprehend he was taken from this earth far too early. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones, teammates, coaches, the rest of Cardinal Nation, and any life he touched in his short time on earth. #RIPOscarTaveras

Prayers for the families of Oscar and his girlfriend. Life is so frail. It’s encouraging to see how he was loved by many, including his Cardinal teammates. They said again and again what a big smile he always had on his face. When someone smiles that much it means he also had a smile in his heart. Prayers for comfort during this awful time of loss.

    Oscar Taveras #18

Sunday night reminded all us that there is more to life than baseball and that life can be taken away regardless of talent, fame, or money.. It’s a very precious blessing.. Oscar will be greatly missed on the field and especially off by friends and family, he made the most of the time he had with all of us and it was a great blessing to watch him play. Prayers go out to everyone in mourning today and in the future.. #OT18 #WearRedForOscar

I can’t help but replay Oscar’s game-tying home run from just 15 days ago, and think back to working the game he debuted in. That’s all everyone around the stadium was talking about, every fan I talked to it was about him, the future. And all the guys at work arguing who’s better, Oscar or Grichuk. And we never will get to know. It’s sad to think you invest so much into a young kid at the age of 16, and he’s taken away before he has truly blossomed. And not just as a baseball player, but as a man.. Get some lessons on shortening your swing from The Man up there, Oscar.

I’ve been a die hard Cardinals fan since I was born. Jon Jay has been my favorite player for a couple years now, but when I heard about Oscar I watched some minor league videos and fell in love with his swing. It had a legendary stroke to it. He was easily one of my favorite Cardinals, top two easily. You will be missed Friend. Rest well
