The Cardinals offer condolences to the family of Oscar Taveras, the 22-year-old Cardinals outfielder who was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic. All fans are invited to use this guestbook blog to share their condolences and memories of Oscar as well.

Milwaukee Brewers v St. Louis Cardinals“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”

“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.”

The team will provide additional information on funeral arrangements at a later time. Please share your condolences and memories in the comments below.

I had never been more excited about a young player coming through the ranks. Every year I’d tell co-workers…”just wait, this kids gonna be special!” We saw glimpses of your greatness, but you were taken from us far too early. FOREVER A REDBIRD

My heartfelt prayers go out to the direct families involved, Oscar’s and Edilia’s—they were both gone too soon. And also to my fellow brothers and sisters in Cardinals Nation, may our Holy Father grant us the peace to understand and give us the comfort to move forward.

When I was 8 years old and just moved away from St. Louis, Derril Kile passed away and it felt like a family member had passed. I havn’t lived there since but have still been following Cardinals baseball my whole life and yesterday when the news came out, I felt the same sick feeling in my stomach and teared up a bit that the youngster, Oscar, had died. I offer my condolences to the families of both him and his gf and to his friends, including Kolten Wong. Can’t imagine what they are all going through. He is in my prayers.

My thoughts and prayers go out to taveras family. Not just cardinal nation but the mlb lost a really really great player. Oscar would be one of the main reasons why i would go watch baseball at hammons field in Springfield, MO. I’ll always remember his first hit in the major’s which was an absolute bomb! Even when he was struggling in the majors he would always have a smile on his face. His follow through was one of the best i have ever seen. Its crazy to think that his last and first hit were both home runs and both were against the giants. Oscar was compared to becoming the next albert pujols. He was taken way too early. RIP Oscar Taveras. Gone but never ever forgotten.

It is such an absolute waste of talent, not to even mention how young he was. It forces me to sit back and give praise to God for everyday he allows my loved ones and I another glorious day on this Earth. Now, more than ever, I wish the Cardinals had made the World Series because Oscar might still be with us. I am praying for his family, his girlfriend’s family, and the entire Cardinal Nation family. Rest in Peace.

Oscar, thank you for being a respectable and professional young man. You were not only an amazing player, but an amazing person too. God must have really wanted you to play for his team in heaven to take you away from your family, and your fans. You will always be remembered as a Cardinal, but also as a man. Thank you Oscar for your time on the Cardinals, and say hi to Stan and everyone else for us. To your family and friends, I’ll be praying that y’all can cope with this, and become even closer with god through this absolute tragedy. Thanks for blessing us with one heck of a talented baseball player, and one heck of a Cardinal.

I remember watching you hit your second career homer from behind the dugout in San Diego, you were on the way to becoming the next Cardinal great. I am going to miss watching the ball fly off the bat and your beautiful left hand swing. Wish you and your girlfriend were still here with us. St Louis will never forget you OT18 and the smile that was on your face at all time. Condolences to both of your families, may you both Rest In Peace.

What I saw in Oscar was a gleaming star, someone who was ready to advance, someone who was going to go far. I hate to know that he’s gone, especially considering that he is my age. It’s just a huge shock and heartbreaking loss that has affected not only Cardinals fans, but baseball fans everywhere. I am sad that he is gone, and only hope that he is somewhere in peace. Rest in Peace, you amazing man.

I was there the day he hit his first home run. That is the moment I have from his shortened career. His life was taken way too soon. He had a personality that everyone loved and his abilities on the field were finally starting to come together. Remember to hold your loved ones tight each and every time you have the chance. You just never know if you’ll see them again.RIP Oscar

I am wearing my Cardinals gear out here in Portland, OR today in honor of him. I know there are others in Cardinal Nation doing the same. I thought he was a great ball player and thought we were lucky to have him. May he rest in peace.

I offer my prayers to his family, friends and fellow teammates of Oscar. He will forever be a Cardinal looking after the players in the outfield.

Be at peace Oscar and Edilia – two young people who’s lives have been tragically taken from us; two young people who will not fulfil their potential or dreams; two families who will no longer share in the joys of their success. Taken from us way way too young, taken, gone, but never to be forgotten.
